The Georgia Premiere of Charlie’s Christmas Wish and fundraising event is set for Friday, November 8th, 2019 at the City Center Auditorium at Elm Street Cultural Arts Village.

Charlie’s Christmas Wish, filmed in and around Cherokee and Pickens Counties, Georgia by Jill Frost Films in conjunctions with Blue Heron Films, is a story about Charlie, a rescued angel dog on a mission to help homeless veterans who have been silently living in the woods. Their plight is discovered by a returning Afghanistan Veteran dealing with his own PTSD.

Today there are over 40,000 homeless Veterans living on the streets of America, 40% of them suffering from mental health issues. Even more alarming is that 9% of these homeless Veterans are females, some with families. It is estimated that there are over 3,000 homeless Veterans in the State of Georgia. In 2018 the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans program (CCHVP) processed 92 homeless Veterans into the program, which provides a number of services including short term housing, food, clothing, job placement, VA Claims processing, and a vehicle donation program, to get Veterans off the street and back into society.

Today, there are no/ZERO shelters for homeless Veterans north of Atlanta and up to the neighboring states of Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. The showing of the Film has been designed to be a fundraiser for a fund to build Veteran housing in Cherokee County, and meet their special needs.

Another alarming issue with Veterans today is that 22 Veterans commit suicide daily some due to issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and combat injuries. Mental Health programs or treatment for many of our Veterans do not meet their needs or are not available, leaving the Veteran in many instances to deal with their condition as best they can. Cherokee

County is home to over 200 Veterans with various forms of PTSD, and they and their families want and need help.

CCHVP is planning a premiere showing of Charlie’s Christmas Wish for two shows on November 8th at the Elm Street Cultural Arts Center located at 8534 Main Street, Woodstock. There will be 300 tickets available for each of the 3:00 and 6:00 shows. Tickets are available for a $10 donation and are going on sale on Friday, September 20th, through the Elm Street Cultural Arts Center website which is https://www.elmstreetarts.org.

As part of the showing, members of the cast including Charlie will be at the movie premiere and there will also be service dogs with their Veteran handlers there for pictures.

About Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program: CCHVP was founded on Veterans Day 2014 and is a registered 501c19 Veteran non-profit. The program currently has no paid staff and is comprised of Veterans and volunteers who draw no salary. All funds raised go to support Homeless Veterans in Cherokee County. Our goal for the creation of a Veterans shelter is to support homeless Veterans of not only Cherokee County but of North Georgia as well.
