Instructor Bios:

Brooks Payne is a freelance percussionist and music educator operating primarily in the Southeast. Composing and arranging for both the marching and orchestral medium, Brooks has made it a concerted effort to advance the musical abilities of others at all grade levels. Students of Brooks have been accepted to schools such as the New School of Music and Berklee College of Music.

Brooks holds a Bachelors of Music Education (BME) from Kennesaw State University with performance experience ranging from musical pits and operatic ensembles to percussion ensemble, wind ensemble, big band and symphonic orchestra.

Simon Needle is a guitar instructor who also frequently performs on bass guitar and has composed and arranged works being played all over the Southeast as well as works for short film and video games. He is pursuing a double major in Jazz Guitar Performance (BM) and Music Theory (BA) and has published and presented research in Georgia as well as internationally.

When he is not teaching, he is performing on guitar or bass in theater productions for Act Three Productions or Independent Artist’s Playhouse or performing Jazz or Rock music around town with his band City Playgrounds or with other great Atlanta musicians.

Matthew Welsh is a senior at Kennesaw State University, currently pursuing a B.M. in Vocal Performance. In addition to being a singer, he is  a collaborative pianist and music director for various churches and theaters in the Woodstock area. Welsh is an alumni of the Cobb County Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts magnet program at Pebblebrook High School (2015) and the Governor’s Honors Program (2014) for voice, as well as a regular participant in the Georgia Music Educator’s Association Allstate Chorus (2011 – 2015).

Welsh’s pedagogical approach is to help others understand, create, and perform music through collaboration and mentorship. As a pianist, teacher, composer, and singer, his greatest joy comes from inspiring people of all ages (and being inspired himself) through music making. Looking at music with a broadened lens allows for a more thorough understanding of performance, practice and history, creating more authentic and well-informed performances. Whether in preparation for a collaborative performance or educating a student in music theory or diction, one can be sure that they are receiving assistance from a mentor, friend, and musical collaborator.
